Clinical explanations & common questions
What is the difference between TMJ and TMD?
TMJ means the temporomandibular joint—the jaw joint in front of each ear. TMD refers to disorders affecting these joints or the muscles involved in jaw movement.
Does a clicking jaw always need treatment?
Clicking without pain or restricted movement is common and generally does not need treatment. Painful clicking, persistent discomfort or locking should be assessed.
Can braces or bite correction cure TMJ pain?
Orthodontics is not a proven cure for TMD. If you also need orthodontic treatment, the reasons for changing your bite and the plan for managing jaw symptoms should be discussed separately.
Does everyone with jaw pain need a splint?
No. A splint may be considered for selected patients after assessment. Evidence for relief of TMD pain is limited, so its purpose, fit and response need review.
Are teeth grinding and TMJ disorders the same thing?
No. Bruxism means grinding or clenching the teeth. TMD describes jaw joint or muscle disorders. They can occur together, but one label does not explain every patient’s pain.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring any existing nightguard or splint, relevant scans or reports, a list of medicines and a short note of your symptoms and previous treatment.
Where can I book a TMJ assessment in Dubai?
Book an evaluation with Dr. Sree in Al Rigga, Deira or Barsha Heights (Tecom), Dubai. The assessment determines the next step, including referral when appropriate.
